Meeting the Demand for Smart, Energy-Efficient LED Lighting

Smart LEDs are enabling homeowners to create comfortable, automated living environments while reducing energy consumption and saving money. With the convenience controlling lights from anywhere through an app or voice assistant and regulations like CA Title 20, the demand for LED lights and the opportunity for device makers is growing.

See how Yeelight uses Silicon Labs BG21 and MG24 for their smart home lighting solutions.

Silicon Labs' Solutions for LED Lighting

Silicon Labs offers the most optimized smart lighting wireless development solution, including wireless SoCs and RF-certified modules with built-in antennas optimized for the bulb form factor, high-temperature rating, and energy regulations. Our portfolio features superior wireless performance at the lowest power for any IoT protocol as well as the most advanced IoT security solution, Silicon Labs Secure Vault and Custom Part Manufacturing Service (CPMS) allow you to differentiate with the most secure LEDs.

Smart Home LED Lighting – Things to Consider in Design and Development

The average home is a challenging RF environment. LED lights are placed in specific locations, regardless of the wireless coverage, so they are only as good as the quality of connectivity. How do you maximize range and wall penetration and minimize latency? How do you best merge EMC shielding and antenna design in the bulb base? Silicon Labs’ wireless SoCs and modules, which includes the MG24 and BG24, feature up to +20 dBm transmit power for 2.4 GHz, and sub-GHz solutions, such as ZG28 and SG28, maximize the range and wall penetration. What kind of automation or advanced features can be added for differentiation? Our recommended products come with, for example, An analog comparator (ACMP), an ADC, or even an I2C bus that can interface with an ambient light sensor (ALS) in intelligent lighting to be used to compare sensor output levels and automatically adjust the brightness or color temperature accordingly.

Energy Consumption & Regulations

Various energy regulations, such as CA Title 20, mandate a low standby current of bulbs, which is a challenge for always-on, connected LED lighting products. Silicon Labs offers the best energy efficiency for all wireless protocols used in smart lighting, allowing you to fulfill energy regulations, gain buyer preference, and increase your sustainability. For example, SiWx917 and SiWx915 Wi-Fi 6 SoCs, and many other Silicon Labs SoCs for lighting are CA Title 20 compliant.

Security in Smart Lighting

How do you comply with security regulations like California SB 327/NIST 8259A and EU 303645? Secure Vault is the most advanced IoT security solution (up to PSA Level 3) and we’re the only silicon vendor offering customized security. We deliver security updates with up to 10 years of longevity, enabling you to differentiate through the most secure LED lighting.

Time-to-Market

Reduce the time spent on antenna design and RF certifications, which is often the most time-consuming areas of smart light development with our MGM240L, MGM210L and BGM210L modules. These devices come with a built-in antenna and worldwide RF certifications, saving you up to 9 months of development time or more.

Integrating LEDs with IoT Ecosystems

Smart home ecosystems including Amazon, Apple, and Google are popular ways to control smart lighting. But how can you address all of these ecosystems without producing multiple SKUs? Silicon Labs’ Matter solution enables you to develop a single SKU. And our Unify SDK simplifies multiprotocol software development for bridging matter Matter and other standards.

Bulb Form-factor and High Temperature

Due to their constrained size, shape, and high temperature requirements, light bulbs are a tough design challenge. Silicon Labs offers MGM210L, MGM240L and BGM210L modules with a bulb-optimized form-factor and temperature ratings to increase design flexibility and reduce size while increasing customer appeal and revenue potential.

Multiprotocol Requirements for LED Lighting

Multiprotocol LED lights allow you to address different wireless regions to maximize revenue. But, how to simplify multiprotocol development and minimize costs? With Silicon Labs' dynamic multiprotocol solutions, you can develop a single wireless design for a LED while enabling multiple wireless protocols – Bluetooth, Thread, Zigbee, Matter, Amazon Sidewalk, Proprietary, Z-Wave, and Wi-Fi.

Simplifying Device Commissioning

Silicon Labs supports several solutions to simplify device setup so you can help users avoid frustrating on boarding. Bluetooth LE coexistence with other protocols allows a quick LED setup using a mobile app. The Z-Wave SmartStart and Amazon Frustration-Free Setup (FFS) are also supported.

Enabling Bluetooth mesh connectivity for LED Lighting

Wireless mesh networking is an ideal technology for multi-luminaire LED lighting systems. The BG24 low-power and the BG27, an ultra-low-power SoCs, support Bluetooth mesh 1.x protocol for high-performance and low-latency connectivity.
